About Assateague Island

Visiting the Park


Assateague Island is a 37 mile long island located along Maryland and Virginia's coasts. The Maryland district is run by the National Park Service as Assateague Island National Seashore. Maryland manages two miles of its district as Assateague State Park. The Virginia district is run by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service as Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge.

Assateague Island has two miles of scenic ocean beaches. This island is best known for its wild Assateague horses that have roamed the sandy beaches and maritime woods for hundreds of years.
