Visiting the Park
Assateague Island is a 37 mile long island located along
Maryland and Virginia's coasts. The Maryland district is run by the
National Park Service as Assateague Island National Seashore. Maryland
manages two miles of its district as Assateague State Park. The Virginia district is run by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service as Chincoteague National
Wildlife Refuge.
Assateague Island has two miles of scenic ocean beaches. This island is best known for its wild Assateague horses that have roamed the sandy beaches and maritime woods
for hundreds of years.
Park Hours
The Virginia district is open:
- January - February from 6 am - 6 pm.
- March - April from 6 am - 8 pm.
- May - September from 5 am - 10 pm.
- October from 6 am - 8 pm.
- November - December from 6 am - 6 pm.
The Maryland district is open:
- All year long and 24 hours a day.
Entrance Fees
The Virginia district fees:
- Foot and bicycle: no fee.
- Vehicle: $20 for 7 days.
- Vehicle: $40 for Refuge Annual Pass.
The Maryland district fees:
- Foot and bicycle: no fee.
- Vehicle: $25 for 7 days.
- Vehicle: $45 for annual park pass.
- Motorcycle: $20 for 7 days.
- Individual: $15 for 7 days.
